The Ministry of Health (MINSA) seized approximately 170 pounds of meat in an advanced state of decomposition and other human consumption products in the district of Atalaya. This irregularity was detected during verification operations on food vendors set up for the pilgrimage to the Miraculous Jesus of Nazareth. Dr. Johanna González, director of the Atalaya Health Center, reported that the seizure took place after parishioners alerted health authorities to a presumed anomaly in one of the sales stalls. After the corresponding inspection, officials confirmed that the meat products about to be sold were unfit for human consumption. According to González, the meat came from the La Chorrera Fair and was intended to be marketed among the thousands of pilgrims who have arrived over the past few weeks at the Minor Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel to participate in religious activities. “We acted immediately upon receiving the citizen's complaint. Upon verifying the merchandise, we confirmed that it was in an advanced state of decomposition, that is, putrefactive, which represented a risk to public health,” stated the official. MINSA reiterated that it maintains permanent operations at the various food sales points in Atalaya, with the objective of ensuring that the products offered comply with the hygiene and safety standards established by law. Health authorities warned that inspections will continue during the pilgrimage and did not rule out the application of sanctions to those who fail to comply with the current provisions, while at the same time calling on pilgrims to report any irregularity that may put their health at risk. With these actions, the Ministry of Health seeks to prevent possible food poisoning and safeguard the well-being of the thousands of faithful who participate each year in one of the country's most massive religious manifestations.
