Chitré 'is Bethlehem' Project Revives Christmas Traditions

The Panamanian city of Chitré has launched the 'Chitré is Bethlehem' project to revive traditional Christmas customs like nativity scenes and posadas. The initiative restores the holiday's spiritual meaning while boosting religious tourism and the local economy.

Visitors to Chitré do not just walk through illuminated parks; they experience an authentic Christmas, where each nativity scene tells a story, each posada brings the community together, and every celebration reminds us that the traditions of old are alive when a community decides to rescue them.

This initiative places nativity scenes or mangers at its center, which for decades were the main symbol of Christmas in neighborhoods and communities before commercial decorations took the spotlight.

A Christmas Route with Identity and Faith

Each park in Chitré has become a stop on a Christmas route that invites locals and visitors to tour the city and have a unique experience, marked by faith, culture, and community life.

In an effort to restore the true meaning of Christmas, the city of Chitré is undergoing a special transformation with the project 'Chitré is Bethlehem', an initiative that rescues old Christmas traditions and, at the same time, boosts religious and cultural tourism in the region.

Today, these mangers once again occupy parks, squares, and community spaces, meticulously crafted by neighbors, parishes, and organizing committees.

Organizers indicated that the project not only seeks to rescue the best of Christmas but also to revitalize the local economy, attracting visitors, strengthening commerce, and generating opportunities for entrepreneurs and artisans in the region.

For January 3rd, the arrival of the Three Wise Men will be commemorated, a representation carried out by priests from the community, which has become one of the most anticipated moments due to its profound religious significance.

A Project with Social and Economic Impact

The Vice-Mayor of Chitré, Alba Osorio, highlighted that this initiative goes beyond the spiritual and cultural aspects.

'In the past, posadas and illuminations were traditions deeply rooted in our communities. The posada calendar offers a continuous program that strengthens the religious sense of the season, with performances in each district depicting scenes such as the Annunciation, the Visitation, the announcement to the shepherds, the visit of the Magi, St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary asking for lodging, and finally the birth of the Child God, in Unión Park in Chitré.'

Family Activities that Boost Tourism

As part of the tourist attraction, the program includes activities for the whole family, with recreational dynamics and a festive atmosphere.

Chitré, a Destination to Experience Christmas

'Chitré is Bethlehem' is consolidating as a proposal that unites tradition, faith, and tourism, turning the city into a benchmark for religious tourism during the Christmas season.
