Panama - The province of Herrera awoke in mourning after the first fatal traffic accident was recorded in 2026. The incident occurred on Saturday night on Avenida El Puerto, on the road leading to Boca de Parita, in Monagrillo, district of Chitré. The fatal victim was identified as Maicol Nieto Atencio, only 18 years old, who was riding a bicycle when he was violently hit by a sedan, whose driver fled the scene after the incident. According to initial reports, the young man was left lying on the pavement after the hit. However, due to the severity of the injuries, his death was confirmed. This caused outrage and consternation among residents and frequent users of this road, who denounce speeding, lack of lighting, signage and road safety measures, especially for pedestrians and cyclists. Paramedics who arrived at the scene performed resuscitation maneuvers and attempted to stabilize him inside an ambulance.
