Panamanian Businesswoman Freed After Bounced Check Case

María Ramos, president of the Colón Chamber of Commerce, was released after voluntarily participating in a hearing for a bounced check case of $70,000. Her lawyer claims everything was settled and no precautionary measures were imposed on her.

María Ramos, a businesswoman from the province of Colón and current president of the Chamber of Commerce of Colón, was released on Tuesday after voluntarily attending a hearing regarding a bounced check case at the offices of the Accusatory Penal System (SPA). However, her defense lawyer, Orlando Maestre, clarified that his client was not apprehended but came to the Judicial Investigation Directorate (DIJ) voluntarily. 'She can move freely, she has no type of personal precautionary measure,' the lawyer stated. The case was filed in June 2025 by supplier Luis Felipe Rivera for an amount of 70 thousand dollars. During the hearing, the apprehension was legalized, an accusation for a crime against the economic order was formulated, and the case was referred to mediation. The lawyer emphasized that his client honored the checks issued, there was a misunderstanding, and everything was resolved. The reading of the mediation results is scheduled for March 2. Bank proofs will be provided in the coming days.
