Panamanian residents close road due to water shortage

Residents of the Escobal district, located on the shores of Gatún Lake in Colón, closed the road in protest due to damage to the pump in the drinking water supply system. Maruquel Solís, 38, reported that they have been facing this problem for three months, with children, the elderly, and people with disabilities being the most affected due to the lack of vital water. She indicated that a part of the pump was damaged and that after consulting with IDAAN, they learned that they did not have the resources to purchase the part and repair the pump. Similarly, Carlos Meléndez, 42, another affected person, stated that wide sectors such as La Estrella, San Carlos, Liberal, and Vietnam are affected by the lack of water. "We have to look for water by taxi, using wheelbarrows, it's even embarrassing to see the elderly looking for water in the lake," he said. He added that they want a permanent solution, not tanker trucks that come one day and then disappear. This closure has also affected the populations of the Ciricito district with free transit. They are asking for the presence of IDAAN officials or the governor to provide them with a solution.
