Panamanian authorities discuss expropriation of abandoned lands in Colón

The Colón Free Port board will consider law amendments to expropriate vacant lots for commercial development. The goal is not punishment, but encouraging investment and revitalizing the region.

The president of the board, Carlos Gómez, indicated that the current legislation allows the Executive to expropriate abandoned lands within the urban area of Colón. Among the main topics to be discussed are the vacant lots in the city, which are currently off the market and cannot be used for new investments due to legal restrictions. This could be a way to recover these spaces and allocate them for commercial projects. The Advisory Board of the Colón Free Port Special System will meet next week to evaluate possible reforms to the Colón Free Port Law. However, Gómez stressed that the goal is not to apply severe sanctions, but rather to encourage owners to reinvest in their properties to revitalize the area.
