Investigation of National Blackout in La Chorrera

The La Chorrera thermoelectric plant is under intense investigation by the Ministry of Environment after an internal fire caused a nationwide blackout on Saturday, March 15. This incident left the country without electricity for several hours and affected critical facilities such as water treatment plants.

The Minister of Environment, Juan Carlos Navarro, reported that urgent inspections were carried out at the thermoelectric plant, revealing non-compliance with environmental regulations, especially regarding the conversion to natural gas that was supposed to reduce the environmental impact of its emissions. The local community has raised recurring complaints about the negative effects of the plant on public health and the environment.

Due to the seriousness of the incident and previous non-compliances, the possibility of permanently closing the plant is being evaluated. The minister has expressed the intention to review contracts and files in coordination with other entities to make a decision on the matter.

Residents of La Chorrera have reported that the thermoelectric plant has contributed to air and water pollution, as well as the presence of heavy metals in the bodies of people living nearby. Medical studies have revealed the presence of lead in hair samples, which has increased concerns about potential adverse health effects.

The Ministry of Environment has ordered a thorough review of all thermoelectric plants in the country to verify compliance with environmental regulations and prevent future similar incidents. Possible health risks to the population will also be investigated, although no formal complaints have been filed in this regard so far.

Some residents have expressed their frustration at the lack of response from authorities and the company regarding previous complaints about pollution and health risks. Environmental concerns have led to questioning the operation of the thermoelectric plant and demanding concrete measures to protect the environment and public health.
