Panama: Mother Arrested After Two-Year-Old's Death from Injuries

Panama - The Public Ministry (MP) ordered the arrest on Friday afternoon of the mother of a two-year-old girl who, according to a medical report, died from multiple injuries. Hours earlier, in the early morning, the National Police and the MP had arrested the girl's stepfather, also allegedly involved in her death. The mother could face charges for crimes against the legal and family order, specifically for child abuse. Meanwhile, the Attorney General's Office for Homicide and Femicide is investigating the stepfather for femicide, aggravated rape, and child abuse. The mother's arrest was carried out at a house located in the Barrio Colón district of La Chorrera, West Panama province. Investigations into this case began on December 3 of this year, when the minor died at a medical center where she had been taken by her stepfather, who claimed she had fallen. However, investigations and medical reports indicated that the child had recent injuries from blows to the face and old scars, evidence of a case of child abuse.
