Road closure in Limoncillo sparks conflict in Barrio Colón

The decision of the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) to order the closure of a road in the Limoncillo sector, Barrio Colón district, has led to a conflict. This road is used by drivers to avoid traffic jams at the entrance to La Chorrera via the Arraiján - La Chorrera highway. Based on a resolution signed by MOP Minister José Luis Andrade, personnel and machinery from this institution proceeded to place a jersey barrier at the entrance to the road. On Tuesday, a group of Limoncillo residents went to the La Chorrera city council to request the reopening of the road, considering that the closure forces hundreds of drivers to spend more than 45 minutes in a traffic jam. The closure of the access has already led to verbal confrontations between those who oppose the reopening of the road and those who demand that the authorities open the passage, arguing that the road is even used by emergency teams. They also indicate that the MOP's decision was made unilaterally, without consulting the residents of the neighboring communities to hear their opinion, but was acted upon at the request of a group of people. During the meeting with the La Chorrera councilors, representatives of the group opposing the closure of the road showed a series of maps where the access road to the highway is demarcated. Gamalie Sousa, a municipal engineer, indicated that, together with the provincial governor, Marilin Vallarino, inspections have been carried out to establish possible points where a road could be opened. Mayor Eloy Chong said that this week he will hold a meeting with Minister Andrade to address this issue and others.
