A guarantees judge ordered the provisional detention of Veraguas baseball team player Juan José Aizpurúa, accused of attempted homicide against Yeison Austin of the Los Santos team. Austin was assaulted last Saturday during a match between the two teams. Judge Indira Moreno legalized the apprehension and accepted the accusation presented by prosecutor Liberia Cedeño, who requested the detention of the accused, arguing that it is a serious crime and that the victim is still hospitalized. During the brawl, baseball player Yeison Austin suffered a traumatic brain injury that required his transfer to a hospital, where he remains admitted. Meanwhile, Mario Luis Delgado, Aizpurúa's lawyer, appealed the provisional detention measure issued against his client. Therefore, an appeal was set before the Superior Court of the Fourth Judicial District for Tuesday, March 31, at 2:30 p.m. The incident occurred last Saturday night at the Roberto Flaco Bala Hernández stadium, located in the city of Las Tablas, Los Santos, during a regular round match of the 2026 Major Baseball Championship. In the fourth inning of the game, when the Veraguas team had a five-run lead over Los Santos, an incident occurred that emptied the benches of both teams. The arguments extended to the stands, where fans from both teams engaged in a massive brawl, in which relatives of some players also participated. Some fans reported that there was no police presence at the stadium that night and that the incident extended for several minutes without any intervention from the authorities. The Panamanian Baseball Federation has opened an investigation into the brawl that occurred that night to apply sanctions to the players involved.
