Panamanian Baseball Player to Remain in Custody for On-Field Assault

The player from the Veraguas team, Juan Antonio Aizpurúa, accused of the crime of attempted homicide against Yeison Austin of the Los Santos team, will remain in provisional prison after the magistrates of the Court of Appeals confirmed the decision adopted by a guarantees judge. The magistrates of the Court of Appeals of the Fourth Judicial District (Los Santos and Herrera), Waldo Batista, Flor María González and Alcides Zambrano, decided to maintain the measure applied to the player of the senior baseball team of Veraguas, considering that it is a serious crime and that the action put Austin's life at risk during a sporting event. In a hearing that began at 2:30 p.m. this Tuesday, the magistrates considered that the decision assumed by the guarantees judge, Indira Moreno, is appropriate in this case, since it is a serious crime that put the victim's physical integrity at risk and that the ruling does not depart from the legal framework. They also considered that the precautionary measures proposed by the defense of the accused, such as house arrest with the possibility of attending an educational center to continue his studies, do not mitigate the procedural risks of the case. On Monday, the guarantees judge Indira Moreno legalized the apprehension and accepted the accusation against Aizpurúa presented by prosecutor Liberia Cedeño, who requested the detention of the accused, arguing that it is a serious crime and that the victim is still hospitalized. The incident occurred last Saturday night at the Roberto 'Flaco Bala' Hernández stadium, located in the city of Las Tablas, during a game of the Senior Baseball Championship between the Los Santos and Veraguas teams. The situation extended to the stadium stands, where fans of both teams came to blows and hurled insults. Yeison Austin remains hospitalized due to the blows with a baseball bat that were allegedly inflicted on him by Aizpurúa during the brawl that occurred during the game. The Panamanian Baseball Federation applied a disciplinary sanction to Aizpurúa, suspending him for four years from tournaments. Other players from the Veraguas and Los Santos teams also received suspensions of between 4 and 15 games from the National Baseball Championship, according to their degree of participation in the brawl that took place on March 28 at the Roberto 'Flaco Bala' Hernández stadium.
