Taking advantage of the summer, farmers from the La Llanita de los Bultrones community in Los Pozos, Panama, self-organized to repair a dirt road essential for crop transport. This decision was made due to severe road damage during the rainy season, causing losses. Residents rented machinery to temporarily improve the road and ensure product removal, stressing the need for a permanent solution from authorities.

Producers Improve Roads to Facilitate Agricultural Marketing

Taking advantage of the summer season and given the advanced deterioration of the road during the winter, agricultural producers from the La Llanita de los Bultrones community, in the Los Pozos district, decided to organize and carry out improvement work on this dirt road at their own expense. The road is essential for the transportation and commercialization of their crops.

The road, approximately three kilometers long, connects this rural area with sectors such as Sabaneta de Leones and is a key route for the transportation of products like guandú, cassava, and other agricultural items that sustain the economy of numerous families in the area.

According to residents, during the rainy season, the road deteriorates severely, becoming impassable and hindering vehicle access and the transport of production. This situation often forces them to transport products on foot, increasing costs and causing losses.

Januario Bultrón, a producer and resident of the community, indicated that the farm owners and residents decided to join forces to rent heavy machinery and carry out palliative work on the road.

We got together among the residents and farm owners to pay together for a few hours of machinery to give the road a temporary fix, at least to be able to get our products out, he expressed.

In winter, we have had to leave the cars far away and walk to be able to get there, he stated.

Producers indicated that the machinery rental was achieved at a cost of $40.00 per hour, with an estimated seven hours of work, which will allow for the improvement of some of the most affected sections and facilitate transit during the dry season.

Although they recognize that these works represent only a temporary solution, residents highlighted that the community initiative seeks to guarantee the continuity of agricultural production and the livelihood of families, while reiterating the importance of the competent authorities providing a definitive solution to this rural production road.

He detailed that the work is carried out during the summer, when the ground conditions allow for access improvement, although he acknowledged that without a more profound intervention, the road is damaged again with the arrival of winter.

Meanwhile, Daniel Ramos Bultrón, also a producer in the area, pointed out that the poor condition of the road directly affects agricultural activity and the quality of life of the residents.

This is a production road, and when it's in bad condition, getting the crops out becomes costly, he said.
