A series of thefts of outboard motors and fishing gear keeps several coastal communities in the Mariato district, Veraguas, on high alert. Artisanal fishermen report that these criminal acts, seemingly linked to an organized gang, jeopardize their livelihood and the local economy. One of the affected individuals, Gulliver Iglesias, indicated that his losses exceed 13 thousand balboas, including essential equipment and tools for his work. "They are leaving us without the possibility to work. Everything they have taken is our only means of earning a living," he lamented. Amid growing concern, the mayor of Mariato, Ángel Batista, convened a meeting with local authorities, the National Police, the National Aeronaval Service, and community representatives. During the meeting, Batista urged for increased surveillance in the area to apprehend those responsible for the thefts. Additionally, he called on the population to cooperate with the authorities and provide information to help resolve this crime wave. For residents, the impact of the thefts goes beyond material losses. Héctor Ballesteros, a local resident, highlighted that many households directly depend on fishing for their sustenance, which worsens the social and economic situation.
