In Natá, parents suspended classes due to an overflowing septic tank, wastewater accumulation, and other infrastructure issues threatening children's health.

Parents suspend classes at school due to unsanitary conditions

Classes at the Centro Educativo Básico General Santa Lucía school, located in Natá, Coclé province, have been suspended at the decision of the parents themselves. They stated they will not allow students to return until the unsanitary conditions at the center are resolved. The complainants explained that the school's septic tank is overflowing, causing wastewater to accumulate in the patio and very close to the classrooms, posing a health risk to students. Although an inspection of the drainage system was carried out last year, the problem persists, which could lead to diseases among the children. This situation is compounded by other issues, such as the deficient electrical system, the lack of drinking water, and the poor condition of the restrooms, which has worsened the school's hygiene conditions. The parents' complaint led to a meeting between representatives of the Ministry of Health, school officials, teachers, and the parents, where the urgent need for a cleaning campaign and to repair the septic tank to ensure a safe environment for students was discussed. Despite the 2025 school year coming to an end, many schools in the country still face shortcomings and demand urgent attention to solve infrastructure and maintenance problems.
