65th San Sebastián de Ocú Fair in Panama Sets Livestock Record

From January 21 to 25, the district of Ocúse will be the stage for the 65th edition of the traditional Feria San Sebastián de Ocú, considered the first agricultural fair in the Herrera province of this year's fair calendar. According to Armida de Barés, treasurer of the fair board, the event's organization is practically complete, highlighting significant growth in the agricultural sector. For this edition, the exhibition and judging of around 400 livestock specimens are expected, surpassing last year's numbers. These animals will be distributed into three large groups: Brahman livestock, organized by the CRISEPA Association; European livestock, and regional livestock. The fair will also feature exhibitions of caprines, exotic birds, and the traditional equestrian show, which includes high school horses, Arab, Andalusian, paso, Peruvian, and work horses, both registered and non-registered. In turn, Reinaldo Salerno Nieto, a member of the board and head of the Agricultural Commission, highlighted that this year will see a record-breaking livestock participation, with at least 70 to 80 more animals than in the previous edition. This increase is due to the adaptation of new spaces to receive regional livestock and high-genetics specimens from various associations across the country. Regarding attendance, the board estimates a ticket revenue of approximately $50,000, while public attendance could be between 35,000 and 38,000 people, considering that a large number of visitors enter for free. The fair maintains its entrance prices: $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children and senior citizens. The fair board reaffirmed its educational commitment by allowing free entry to agricultural institutes in the area and the Veraguas province, including a delegation of 65 students who can get a close look at the MIDA orchard, where traditional products and regional crops are displayed. In addition to the agricultural component, the fair will feature artisans, and to date, all exhibitor spaces are already occupied. This is complemented by family attractions such as lake rides, mechanical games, and zip-lining. The board clarified that although the fair is dedicated to San Sebastián, it does not directly coincide with the religious festivities, which end on January 20, while the fair officially begins on Wednesday, January 21.
