Kaspersky reveals five cybersecurity 'red flags' challenging companies in Latin America

A Kaspersky study reveals that Latin American companies face an average of 12 incidents per year, with recovery costs exceeding $1.8 million. Experts identify five key vulnerabilities threatening business and propose automated resilience solutions.

Kaspersky reveals five cybersecurity 'red flags' challenging companies in Latin America

Despite progress in their digitalization processes, many organizations lack the infrastructure and resources to scale their protection capabilities. When a company's digital growth outpaces its cybersecurity capabilities, preventing attacks and complying with regulations become constant challenges.

Experts at Kaspersky have identified the five most common weaknesses, or 'red flags', that need urgent attention to avoid catastrophic business disruptions.

Critical Weaknesses in Digital Strategy Cybersecurity in the region is compromised by a combination of human, technical, and strategic factors:

  1. Digitalization without parallel protection: The accelerated adoption of new systems and wider connectivity drive innovation, but also increase the attack surface. The lack of training in good digital practices for general staff also persists, making them susceptible to social engineering scams.

  2. Lack of trained personnel: Nearly half of the companies in Latin America (48%) operate with understaffed digital security teams. Additionally, in 12% of cases, the protection function is left to employees without the necessary specialized training, leaving wide vulnerabilities.

  3. Insufficient protection on cloud platforms: Although about 35% of companies in the region already use the cloud to store and share data, few perform regular backups or adequately protect this information and access devices.

  4. Low maturity in cybersecurity: Numerous organizations are still in the early stages of building basic protection processes. This landscape demands automated solutions and intelligent systems capable of analyzing data in real-time to identify suspicious behaviors and respond immediately.

  5. Massive volume of threats: The rapid pace of threats, with over 4,600 new ones detected daily according to Kaspersky, makes it unsustainable to rely solely on manual defenses.

The Solution is Automated Resilience Claudio Martinelli, General Director for the Americas at Kaspersky, emphasizes that «recognizing warning signs is a priority for companies; it's not just about reacting to threats, but anticipating them». The time to update cybersecurity tools is now, before a minor incident becomes a catastrophic breach. Experts suggest that identifying these 'red flags' indicates that traditional defenses are no longer sufficient. The absence of comprehensive strategies, clear policies, and response protocols turns cybersecurity into a purely reactive effort rather than a preventive one.

The use of personal devices by nearly half of the employees intensifies the risk of loss or misuse of critical data.
