A new survey by World, analyzing responses from over 31,400 people in 10 countries, including more than 300 Panamanians, has highlighted that distrust in online shopping in Panama has become the essential factor defining purchasing decisions.
The study underscores that the sales season remains fertile ground for digital fraud. In Panama, nearly 20% of respondents have been victims of digital fraud, an exposure that, while below the regional average, has heightened consumer alertness.
The Abandonment of the Cart out of Fear
The true impact of this crisis of trust is reflected in purchasing behavior. The survey confirmed that two out of ten Panamanians have been victims of digital fraud, leading consumers to prefer losing a deal over risking their safety online.
The technology operates in a decentralized manner, preserving privacy by using a mathematical code to confirm authenticity without sharing personal data with platforms or companies.
The survey confirms that the future of e-commerce in Panama will be defined not only by price but also by credibility and transparency, consolidating the Panamanian consumer as a key player in the shift towards a new digital economy based on trust.
Carlos Angel, General Manager for Panama and the Andean Region at Tools for Humanity, commented on this trend: "Today, beyond the deals, trust is what truly defines a good digital experience. Consumers want equality, and that starts with knowing who or what is on the other side of the transaction."
Proof of Humanity (PoH) as a Solution
Despite the caution, the Panamanian consumer is willing to restore digital trust. 89% of respondents stated they would adopt Proof of Humanity (PoH) technologies if they guaranteed a fairer experience with less fraud and real reviews.
Traditional security measures like passwords or CAPTCHAs are often insufficient to stop bots. In contrast, PoH technology offers a new foundation for trust by ensuring that only unique humans participate in promotions, reviews, and interactions, reducing fraud and misuse of automation.
In this context, World ID emerges, a digital credential developed by World that allows a person to prove they are a unique human without revealing their identity.
