The Consumer Protection and Competition Defense Authority (Acodeco) has begun its annual Christmas operation. The objective of this action is to verify compliance with advertising standards and the normal commercialization of products during the peak consumption season nationwide. The main goal of the institution is to ensure respect for the current consumer protection laws, as well as other regulations under its jurisdiction. To this end, Acodeco will carry out both daily and special inspections, including night and weekend operations, in various commercial establishments.
The inspections include checking expiration dates for perishable products, price visibility, and the proper functioning of price scanners and scales. Acodeco reminded citizens that the invoice is essential for any claim regarding a purchased product.
During one such inspection, 13 non-compliances related to the lack of a posted or visible price to the public were recorded. The most frequent anomaly found during the inspection was the omission of the expiration date for special offers or sales, which amounted to 42 violations.
In the event that a paid item cannot be delivered for reasons stated by the supplier, the consumer retains the right to a full refund of their money. Acodeco also pointed out that the warranty on a new item is not negotiable; it takes effect from the moment of delivery, not from when a payment is made.
For a safe and informed purchase, the Authority advises making a list of priorities, comparing prices, and inquiring about warranties and market options. It is essential to know and read the policies or conditions set by the economic agent before purchasing a good or service, whether for personal use or as a gift. Consumers are recommended to check and test the item immediately upon receipt. Finally, it is recommended not to provide a credit card or sign documents without full security and to verify any transaction made immediately.
Consumers can also contact Acodeco through its official social media accounts on Facebook and X, as well as on the official website. The institution has made the Institutional Information and Complaint System (Sindi) available to the public, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, via WhatsApp and Telegram at 6330-3333. Specific dates for these special verifications in shopping malls are: December 4, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29, and 30.
