The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) of Panama has announced the resumption of the Omar Torrijos Avenue expansion project. The project, which began in January 2018, was plagued by issues, including contractor non-compliance and legal disputes over environmental damage. This led to the termination of the initial contract in January 2020. The project is now restarting with a new consortium, 'Caminos de Omar', and an updated budget of $105 million, an increase from the original $89.1 million. The new cost includes three years of maintenance by the contractor. The project aims to improve connectivity between the Bridge of the Americas, the future Fourth Bridge over the Panama Canal, and the Centenario Bridge. Key changes include a new road design to prevent past issues and the elimination of a level crossing with the Panama Canal Railway in the Miraflores area. Work will begin at critical points affected by previous operations. The 7-kilometer road, stretching from the Corozal area to the access road of the Centenario Bridge, will be widened.
