Violence Erupts During Protests in Panama City

The Ombudsman has expressed its strong condemnation of an act of violence that left a member of the police unit seriously injured after being hit by a block thrown from upper floors during recent protests near Balboa Avenue. They emphasize that such violent actions violate human rights and undermine peaceful and democratic coexistence in the country. They urge the restoration of a climate of peace and respect, ensuring the medical attention necessary for those affected by these disturbances.

In response to the disturbances generated by union groups on the Cinta Costera, Security Minister Frank Ábrego strongly condemned these violent acts that resulted in 16 police officers injured. Ábrego reiterated that the Public Force has the responsibility to maintain law, order, and to protect the population, both residents and passersby, from any vandalism or violent acts.

"We deplore any violent, criminal, and terrorist actions against citizens," Ábrego expressed, highlighting that it is unacceptable to use the construction of the Children's Hospital as a shield to commit violent acts. The minister informed that those responsible for these acts will face legal consequences for attacking law enforcement agents and damaging state property. Additionally, he lamented the need to use tear gas to restore tranquility.

The National Police was instructed to take legal action against the protesters who participated in these criminal acts, including the throwing of objects from a construction site. The Ministry of Security requested the company responsible for the construction of the hospital to conduct an inventory of the damages caused. The aim is to ensure security and public order, protect peaceful coexistence, and maintain peace for all citizens in the national territory.
