**PARLATINO President and OAS Secretary General held bilateral talks on regional development and cooperation**
In Panama, the President of the Republic of Panama Laurentino Cortizo and the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, held a bilateral meeting with the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Panama, Ana Patricia Valdes. The main outcome of the meeting was the agreement to establish an Inter-American Parliamentary Observatory to promote the implementation of the 2026-2030 National Development Plan of Panama.
During the meeting, OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro presented a 60-year commemorative book of PARLATINO. The OAS Secretary General also presented the "Encyclopedia of National Parliamentary Systems OAS for the Development of Panama 2026-2030" program, which supports the Panamanian government's program and initiatives of the United Nations system, oriented towards the realization of national priorities of Panama. The document aligns with the objectives of the country's sustainable development towards 2030, with national strategies — a plan of parliamentary sovereignty for 2025-2029, "Panama 2030", and also with multilateral obligations of the states, including the Pacto del Futuro ("Pact for the Future").
The OAS Secretary General emphasized key themes of PARLATINO's work, such as peace, democracy, youth, digital security, cybersecurity, intellectual integrity, and ecological policy. The OON called for active participation in regional parliamentary mechanisms and invited the coordinator to join the Assembly in 2026, and also in June 2025 at the headquarters of the Central American Parliament (APACTJ).
The Republic of Panama agreed with the need to strengthen parliamentary democracy, support for the priorities of the Panamanian government, gender equality, including digital form, and also programs, linked with the Tenth Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Education (OAS 2024-2023).
