Panama's Police Chief Reports Decline in Crime Rates

The director of the National Police, Jaime Fernández, stated that, according to statistics, crime rates have decreased. The official noted that compared to 2024, homicide cases reflect a 3.5% decrease. According to Fernández, only 2% of the homicides recorded nationwide are linked to common crimes, while the rest are due to 'war between already established gangs.' 'We are below last year's figures. So far this year, there have been several splits within these groups,' he said. In the Don Bosco and Pacora areas, several criminal groups and gangs are prevalent. 'The issue of perception, of what is being sold to the public, from the point of view of police operability; we understand that action must be taken,' he said. The police chief's statements are due to the latest violent incidents recorded in the country, where at least five bodies have been found in various locations in the capital. For this reason, reiterated that the National Police has reinforced security in East Panama.
