Two men arrested and nearly 59 thousand counterfeit dollars seized in Panama

Panamanian authorities, during Operation Numeral, arrested two members of a dollar counterfeiting ring and seized nearly 59,000 counterfeit bills. The investigation is ongoing.

The result of Operation Numeral, carried out by the authorities in the Juan Díaz and Don Bosco districts, was the apprehension of two men and the seizure of 59,000 dollars in counterfeit bills. The suspects, presumed members of a dollar counterfeiting ring, were captured in a shopping center in Juan Díaz after being detected by police units moving in a vehicle with a suspicious attitude. To the agents' surprise, they found inside 24,720 dollars in counterfeit bills in denominations of 10, 20, 50, and 100, which, upon careful examination, were determined to be counterfeit as they all had the same serial number. The investigation led the units of the Judicial Investigation Directorate and the Public Prosecutor's Office to a fabric store located in Don Bosco, where they found another 34,277 dollars in counterfeit bills of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. Apparently, the fabric store served as a point of resale for the counterfeit bills, so the investigations continue to locate the equipment used for duplication, as well as other individuals involved in this network. Meanwhile, the detainees will face a guarantees judge, who will legalize their apprehension, consider the charges filed for the crime against public faith in its modality of currency counterfeiting, and establish the precautionary measure they must comply with while the case investigation progresses. The nervousness of the men gave them away, which is why the officers requested to search the inside of the vehicle.
