Panama Honors Rubén Darío

Panama held an event to honor the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío. The event, organized by the Nicaraguan ambassador, highlighted his literary contribution, ideas for Latin American unity, and criticism of imperialism.

Panama City hosted a solemn event to commemorate the 159th anniversary of the birth of the Nicaraguan intellectual Rubén Darío (1867-1916). Organized by Ambassador Carlos Midence of Managua, the event at the National Library celebrated the thinker, writer, poet, journalist, and diplomat, the foremost representative of Spanish-language Modernism. Ambassador Midence emphasized Darío's legacy for new generations, his call for the unity of the Latin race, and his stance as a defender of peace. He also highlighted Darío's contribution to popular culture, citing works such as 'Journey to Nicaragua and Tropical Intermezzo' and 'Folklore of Central America'. Meanwhile, Panamanian poet Manuel Orestes Nieto spoke about Darío's Panamanian roots and his sharp criticism of US expansionist policy, particularly in his ode 'To Roosevelt'. The event was attended by numerous intellectuals, academics, political figures, and diplomats from various countries.
