Continuation of Exhumation at Panama's Garden of Peace Cemetery

The 'December 20, 1989 Commission' announced the continuation of the exhumation process at the Garden of Peace Cemetery from February 2, under the supervision of the Public Ministry. The goal is to identify victims of the 1989 U.S. military invasion. The work will include manual excavations and scientific analysis of remains.

Once the fieldwork is completed, the remains will be transferred to the facilities of the IMELCF, where the corresponding anthropological and genetic analyses will be carried out. The Commission noted that previous experiences in this and other cemeteries in the country have allowed significant advances in the recovery and identification of remains, strengthening the processes of memory, truth, and reparation for affected families. The proceedings are in charge of a specialized technical team from the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Sciences (IMELCF), with the support of forensic anthropology experts, following internationally recognized technical and scientific standards. They are carried out under the order and supervision of the Public Ministry.

In this new phase, an area of graves previously studied will be intervened, where the existence of unidentified human remains is presumed. Manual excavations, photographic and photogrammetric recording, identification of archaeological features, as well as detailed documentation of criminalistic evidence of interest, will be included in these works. The December 20, 1989 Commission announced that this Monday, February 2, starting at 8:00 a.m., they will continue with the exhumation process at the Garden of Peace Cemetery.

These actions are part of the investigations aimed at clarifying the identity of victims of the U.S. military invasion of Panama in December 1989.
