Provisional Arrest in Homicide Case of Elderly Man in Panama

Two young people have been provisionally arrested in Panama on suspicion of murdering a 74-year-old man. The pair is charged with several serious crimes, including aggravated homicide. The investigation continues, and the participation of other individuals is not ruled out.


According to the Public Ministry, the couple was provisionally apprehended and faces charges for deprivation of liberty, aggravated homicide, criminal association, aggravated robbery, and financial crime, following an investigation that allowed reconstructing the events.

As a precautionary measure, the judge ordered a provisional detention for six months for both defendants, while investigations advance and the judicial process enters its next phase.

The Prosecutor's Office argued that the way the crime was executed reveals premeditation, so the participation of other people is not ruled out, considering that the defendants would not have acted alone.

Provisional detention for a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman for aggravated robbery, criminal association, and deprivation of liberty, after investigations by the Homicide and Femicide Section of the Regional Prosecutor's Office of Coclé, for a fact that occurred on January 9 in Penonomé.

If found guilty, they could face sentences exceeding 45 years in prison, as it involves five serious crimes.

Subsequently, authorities managed to locate the elderly man's vehicle in the district of San Miguelito, where it was intercepted while being driven by Martínez, with Ibarra as co-pilot.

The victim's body was found in the waters of a lake in Penonomé, initiating the judicial proceedings.

Two young people, aged 21 and 22, were pointed out by authorities as the presumed authors of the homicide of 74-year-old elderly man Daniel Sáenz Cortez, a crime that has shaken the district of Penonomé, in the province of Coclé.

The authorities reiterated that the case remains under investigation, with the aim of fully clarifying this fact that has caused consternation and alarm in the Penonomé community.

According to the prosecutor in charge, Sáenz Cortez died from a cardiac laceration and thoracic trauma, caused by multiple blows with blunt objects to the head and limbs.

During the multiple requests hearing, held in the Accusatory Penal System of Penonomé, the Prosecutor's Office presented the evidence gathered.

They are José Antonio Martínez, 22 years old, and Lorena Ibarra, alias "La Mony", 21 years old.
