New Control Measures at Pesé Landfill After Fires

Following a series of fires at the municipal landfill in Pesé, Herrera province, which affected the health and tranquility of nearby residents, local authorities have announced new control measures to prevent future incidents. The Pesé Municipality has prohibited the entry of unauthorized persons to the landfill after 3:00 p.m. Access for material extraction will be permitted from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. under the supervision of municipal staff. Once the established time is up, all activities will be suspended, and individuals remaining on the site will be accountable to the National Police, which is authorized to impose sanctions and corrective measures. The mayor of Pesé, Yecenia Alfonso, reminded that smoking or setting fires inside the landfill is strictly prohibited and warned that non-compliance with these regulations could lead to the total suspension of access, even during authorized hours. Although she acknowledged that some people depend on this activity for their livelihood, Alfonso emphasized that staying at the landfill will be conditional on strict compliance with the rules, prioritizing citizen safety and public health. As part of the reinforcement plan, the municipality is advancing in the installation of surveillance cameras and the assignment of permanent machinery to improve control and the site's operability. Additionally, she reiterated the prohibition on bringing wood into the landfill, as it is a material that increases the risk of fires, following recommendations from the relevant authorities.
