A judge has charged Víctor Antonio Navarro with femicide in the murder of Maritza Tejeira. He was ordered into provisional detention as his defense files for an appeal.


Judge charges Navarro with femicide

A guarantees judge charged 22-year-old Víctor Antonio Navarro with the crime of Against Life and Physical Integrity in the femicide modality. The accused is accused by the Public Ministry's Homicide and Femicide Prosecutor's Office of the murder of Maritza Tejeira, whose body was found on November 13 in the San Carlos district. During the multiple requests hearing, the guarantees judge also ordered the precautionary measure of provisional detention. Navarro's defense filed a reconsideration appeal, which will be resolved on December 4. During the hearing, the prosecution indicated that Maritza Tejeira's death was caused by ligature strangulation. After failed contact attempts, the judge fined the lawyer $100. Navarro's defense argued that at the time of the homicide, Navarro was in the province of Darién. The hearing, initially scheduled for 10:00 a.m., was postponed for several hours due to the absence of the defendant's lawyer. Relatives indicated that the withdrawal was due to their inability to raise the lawyer's fees. The judge appointed a public defender, who requested to adjourn the hearing until 4:00 p.m. to study the file.
