Panama's Ministry of the Environment announced the addition of 300 new park rangers to Coiba National Park and the construction of a new scientific station to enhance protection and research at the World Heritage site.


Strengthening Protection of Coiba National Park in Panama

The effective protection of Coiba National Park is a priority that seeks to generate direct benefits for the population through conservation actions with a social impact. In this regard, the incorporation of 300 new park rangers into the force of the Ministry of the Environment (MiAMBIENTE) was announced.

Authorities from MiAMBIENTE and Coiba AIP announced the reinforcement of surveillance and progress in the construction of a new scientific station within the protected area. During the event, concrete actions to strengthen surveillance and scientific research at this World Natural Heritage site were highlighted.

Deputy Minister of the Environment Óscar Vallarino emphasized the importance of joint work between state institutions, local governments, academia, and communities. This measure reinforces the security and protection of the area's natural resources against various threats.

Coiba AIP Executive Director Edgardo Díaz-Ferguson presented the progress in the construction of the park's new scientific infrastructure, a project supported by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). He also noted that the project will facilitate international research and strengthen environmental education for future generations.

Deputy Minister Vallarino delivered equipment for solid waste management to the mayor of Las Palmas, Ezequiel Rodríguez, including supplies for garbage trucks.

The meeting was attended by the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP), the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), the mayoralties of Soná, Montijo, Mariato, and Río de Jesús, as well as Mar Viva foundation and representatives of the fishing sector, who reaffirmed their commitment to territorial planning and sustainable tourism in the region.

Currently, the park has a team of 25 park rangers who perform custody duties uninterruptedly 24 hours a day.
