Panama Restores Taboga Island Dock

The AMP repairs Isla Perico dock. Five new vessels will provide affordable sea transport for Taboga residents. Authorities negotiate with private companies on fare regulation.

The Panama Port Authority (AMP) is carrying out repair work on the Isla Perico dock, an infrastructure that was recently recovered after remaining under private administration for years and will serve for the departure of the taboganos.

In line with this, De Gracia informed that five vessels will join the maritime transport service for the residents of Taboga, offering affordable rates and comfortable conditions.

Alexander De Gracia, AMP's subadministrator, acted as a mediator in a meeting that brought together national and local authorities, including Birna Luque, Vice Minister of the Presidency; Jorge Correa, deputy director of the Panama Tourism Authority; Ramón Ramos, mayor of Taboga; Raúl Varela, president of the City Council; representatives of the community; island merchants; and tourist transport operating companies.

In compliance with its legal powers, established in Law No. 56 of August 6, 2008, General of Ports, the AMP reiterated its responsibility to ensure maritime safety, protect human life at sea, and guarantee the free transit of vessels in national waters.

Similarly, it recognized the population's right to peaceful protest, although it clarified that the prices of private companies respond to market conditions regulated by the principle of free supply and demand and are not part of this institution's competencies.

The current AMP administration plans to carry out a new bidding process for the construction of a dock on Taboga Island.

The purpose of the meeting was to reach an agreement that guarantees legal security, fosters free competition, and protects the rights of users.

Currently, one of them is already operational; two more will be added next week, while two others are in the process of completing the necessary procedures to enter the market.

Starting this Friday, trips by two tourist transport operators (ferries) to Taboga Island will resume.
