The idea is that this cooperation with the Colombians will not only bring seeds, but also employment, knowledge, and food stability for the people of Panama. In simple terms: agriculture is being reactivated, with high-yielding seeds, hopeful producers, and a government that —for now— seems to be delivering on its promises. The Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) is moving to acquire certified rice seeds from Colombia, as it has become clear that Panamanian producers need a hand. Due to climate change and the high cost of everything, many have had to plant with whatever is available, even if it's not the best. For this reason, a MIDA delegation, led by Abel Aparicio and José Luis Jorge, along with members of FAPAGRAP, traveled to Colombia to meet with FEDEARROZ, the experts in this field. There, they reviewed how they work, what seeds they use, and how they can help Panama improve its production. Minister Roberto Linares said that the paperwork is already being prepared to officially bring in those seeds, fulfilling the word of President José Raúl Mulino, who promised to support the agricultural sector. He explained that with these new varieties, rice can yield more and better withstand the climate, giving producers more peace of mind. They also discussed planting soy as an alternative crop to rotate the land and care for it better.
