Panama's National Minimum Wage Commission has begun its work. The government, workers, and employers are seeking a compromise that would satisfy the needs of employees without harming the country's economy.

Panama to Discuss Minimum Wage Increase

Panama's Ministry of Labor and Labor Development is calling for prudence and responsibility during discussions on a wage adjustment. Within the framework of the installation of the National Minimum Wage Commission, which brings together representatives from the business, worker, and government sectors, Minister Jackeline Muñoz emphasized that any adjustment must be balanced, taking into account the needs of workers as well as the effects on employment and the economy. "We are not here to impose positions. We are here to listen, analyze, and build consensus," she added, stressing the importance of avoiding extreme measures. From the business sector, representative Gabriel Diez highlighted the need for the adjustment to be made responsibly so that its effects reach those who truly need it. He also expressed concern that the country has not yet achieved an economic recovery in all sectors, and the unemployment rate exceeds 10%. Many micro-enterprises are on the brink of bankruptcy, and informal labor is another challenge to be considered. From the worker's side, Aniano Pinzón recalled that workers have long fought for a decent wage that covers their basic needs, especially in a context of high inflation. During his intervention, he requested a fair minimum wage to face the current high cost of life, which makes the situation unsustainable for many families. The minister also warned that, according to the Labor Market Observatory, an excessive increase could lead to a rise in unemployment and informality. The National Minimum Wage Commission will continue its deliberations in the coming days, with the hope of reaching an agreement that benefits all involved sectors without jeopardizing employment or the country's economic stability.
