San Miguelito Mayor Presents Plan to Combat December Waste Surge

The mayor of the San Miguelito district, Ima Hernández, presented on Monday the "Mission Cleanup" plan, a set of measures that will be implemented during November and December to strengthen waste management in the district. Hernández explained that December is the month with the highest waste generation. Last year, around 520 tons were recorded daily, a 30% increase compared to the rest of the year. Therefore, she announced the activation of special operations to prevent the increase in waste from leading to a possible health crisis. "Over the past few weeks, we have eliminated critical points and advanced in multiple communities; however, there is still a lot to be done," the mayor stated. Hernández detailed the actions that will be carried out under the plan: * Increase in special collection and recycling days. These measures will be supported by images captured by cameras installed in different sectors of the district. Progress in the bidding process. While the selection of a new collection company is underway, the Municipality opened a period in Panama Compra to receive quotes from companies interested in participating in the transition plan, which will begin on January 19. Proposals can be submitted until November 21, and the bidding act for the new contract is set for November 27. Update of data for the cleaning fee. Hernández also informed that, due to the lack of delivery of the cleaning fee amounts by the current company, the Municipality has started a data update process. * Permanent cleaning in critical points to prevent sources of contamination. The Municipality will also reinforce the supervision of the collection company Revisalud, which currently performs between 75% and 80% of the service. Fines of B/. 25.00 to B/. will be applied to those who do not comply with the regulations. Starting on January 19, the Municipality will assume the direct collection of fees. Residents can update their information at the municipal offices, on the web page, or via WhatsApp (6850-5613), presenting their electricity bill and the amount they currently pay. Supervision will be stricter until the end of the contract. * Continuation of the "Fast Recycling" service at Los Andes Mall and Villa Lucre. * Expansion of routes for the collection of bulky waste. * Weekly operation of the Billy Truck, which will tour the districts every Wednesday.
