Panama sees a surge in fraud cases. Authorities report over 5,000 complaints this year, urging citizens to remain vigilant online.

Scammers continue to target Panamanians. Statistics from the Public Ministry (MP) reveal that, as of October, 585 complaints of this crime have been filed, totaling 5,100 cases so far this year, an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2024, when 4,614 cases were registered. Fraud remains the most committed offense with 4,874 complaints, a 15% increase from the previous year, which recorded 4,242 accusations. The report shows a slight 5% decrease in aggravated fraud, dropping from 143 to 136 judicial notifications. Regions with fewer incidents include: Los Santos (96), Bocas del Toro (58), Darién (29), Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca (6), and Guna Yala Comarca (4). Authorities recommend that Panamanians do not click on unknown links, protect their personal documents, and be cautious with offers they receive through digital tools, as these are the most commonly used to commit these crimes. Primarily, scammers use WhatsApp to impersonate family members or friends, requesting verification codes, disaster aid, or announcing prizes. The provinces of Panamá (2,849), Panamá Oeste (626), and Chiriquí (482) persist as the most affected, followed by the district of San Miguelito (297), Colón (188), Coclé (185), Veraguas (143), and Herrera (137). They noted that victims of fraud suffer not only material losses but also emotional ones, as these situations damage their trust and stability. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the issue and take the necessary time to respond to messages. Cybercrime Although the modification or manipulation of computer programs shows a 66% reduction, citizens continue to be victims of this crime through text messages or phone calls.
