A new research study led by Mecalux and the Intelligent Logistics Systems Lab (ILS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Center for Transportation & Logistics confirms that artificial intelligence (AI) has ceased to be an experimental tool and has become a fundamental driver in the warehouses that support global supply chains. The study, which compiled responses from over 2,000 professionals across 21 countries, highlights that the adoption of advanced technologies has reached a point of maturity, transforming the sector's productivity, precision, and workforce. Rapid Adoption and Return on Investment The penetration of automation and artificial intelligence is notable, with more than nine out of ten warehouses already using some form of these technologies. Dr. Winkenbach concludes that while machine learning predicts problems, 'generative AI facilitates the design of solutions.' Contrary to fears of job replacement, artificial intelligence is increasing productivity and satisfaction, with more than half of the surveyed organizations reporting an increase in their workforce. New roles are emerging, such as AI and ML engineers, automation specialists, and data scientists, suggesting that intelligent automation is expanding employment opportunities in the sector. Looking to the future, nearly all companies plan to expand their use of artificial intelligence in the short term, with 87% expecting to increase their AI budgets. Companies consider GenAI the most valuable method in current logistics facilities for applications like warehouse distribution optimization and code generation for automation systems. AI is being integrated into daily workflows that include order preparation, inventory optimization, workforce planning, and equipment maintenance. The main obstacles include a lack of technical expertise, data quality, and implementation costs. Investment in AI is paying off faster than expected, with an average timeline of just two to three years.
MIT and Mecalux Study: 60% of Global Warehouses Now Integrate AI
A new MIT and Mecalux study confirms AI is no longer experimental but a fundamental driver of global supply chains. Over 60% of warehouses now use AI, boosting productivity and delivering ROI in just 2-3 years.
