Panama Canal strengthens security protocols due to heavy rains

The Panama Canal announced the reinforcement of its operational security protocols due to the intense and constant rains registered in the hydrographic basin, a situation that has required maintaining controlled discharges at the Madden and Gatún dams.

As part of the preventive measures, the administration ordered the temporary closure of the Gamboa ramp to carry out vegetation cleaning work in the riverbeds, as well as the suspension of activities at Gallo pier.

The entity also requested users and visitors to avoid any activity in the areas located downstream from the Gatún and Alhajuela dams while the current conditions persist, in order to prevent risks.

The Canal emphasized that the discharges and restrictions respond exclusively to safety criteria, due to the increase in reservoir levels caused by the rains.

Finally, it reported that it will continue to monitor the hydrological behavior of the basin and will communicate, through its official channels, any changes or additional measures that are considered necessary.
