The mayor of the San Miguelito district, Irma Hernández, stated that due to the irresponsibility, failure to comply with operational plans, and lack of oversight by previous administrations of the company Revisalud, they are now facing a major problem with waste, which she assured, “soon,” “will come to an end.”
“The next January 18, a long-term predatory contract will expire, a contract in which no one benefited more than just the collecting company,” said the mayor on Debate Abierto.
Hernández indicated that starting January 18, there will be a different dynamic. She promised that the waste collection service will be maintained uninterruptibly after the current company leaves, while the bidding for the new district concession, which will be for 20 years, is defined.
She stated that to ensure the service is not interrupted, they have three selected companies, and the district has been divided into three distinct zones: green, orange, and blue.
In the green zone, which includes a part of José Domingo Espinar and the corregimiento of Rufina Alfaro, the company Volquetes y Transporte Corro, S.A. was authorized for 1 million 303 thousand dollars ($1,303,000.00).
In the orange zone (Arnulfo Arias Madrid, Belisario Porras, Belisario Frías, and part of the corregimientos of Omar Torrijos and José D. Espinar), Roca Atlántica, S.A. was selected for the sum of 1 million 539 thousand dollars ($1,539,000.00).
While in the blue zone (Victoriano Lorenzo, Amelia Denis de Icaza, part of Omar Torrijos, and the corregimiento of Mateo Iturralde), Eco Septic Panama Corp. will operate for 1 million 26 thousand dollars ($1,026,000.00).
In total, the municipality will have to pay 3 million 868 thousand dollars ($3,868,000.00) for these contracts, which have a duration of six months and are pending approval for contracts to be signed and to go through the endorsement of the Comptroller General's Office.
