In Panama, the number of births fell by 2% in 2025 compared to the previous year, while the number of marriages increased by 13%, according to data from the Civil Registry published on Tuesday. Last year, 64,252 births were registered — 32,877 boys and 31,375 girls, a 2% decrease from 2024 — and 23,946 deaths were registered — 13,536 men and 10,410 women — which resulted in a 2% increase from the previous year. According to the most recent national census of 2023, Panama has a population of 4,064,780 people. The province of Panama is the most populous, with 1,439,575 inhabitants, followed by the adjacent Panama Oeste (653,665) and the western Chiriquí (471,071). The province of Panama, where the capital and the country's most populous city are located, registered the highest number of births (23,835) and deaths (11,186), followed by Chiriquí with 10,663 and 3,286, respectively. According to official data, 31.7% of Panama's population considers itself of Afro-descent, 17.2% as indigenous, and about 6% are immigrants. In the same period, the number of marriage registrations nationwide reached 11,595, an increase of 13%, while divorces totaled 4,370, a 2% decrease. 'Based on the official data for 2025, the Panamanian population showed a socio-demographic phenomenon in which the number of births marks a 2% decrease in registrations compared to the previous year; in marriages there was an increase of 13%, deaths increased by 2%, and divorces decreased by 2%,' a statement from the Electoral Tribunal indicated.
