The Panamanian Government will launch the prequalification process next month for the incorporation of a third mobile operator in Panama. This measure aims to boost competition in the telecommunications sector and improve service quality for users. According to the Public Services Authority (Asep), this initial phase will take approximately seven months, so if the established deadlines are met, the bidding process would take place by the end of December of this year. The initiative responds to a sustained demand from Panamanians, who for years have demanded better rates, greater coverage, and more efficient service quality. «What we are looking for is a mobile operator that is present in our country, with its own infrastructure, that allows for more competition, not only in prices but also in service quality,» highlighted the official. The project contemplates that the new operator will begin operations in the first quarter of 2027, which would mark a milestone in the local telecommunications market. As part of the opening and transparency process, the authorities have enabled a microsite where interested companies can obtain detailed information on the requirements and conditions to participate in the bidding process. Currently, Panama has about 5 million active mobile lines, which evidences a robust market, but with room for greater diversification of offers that will directly benefit users. With this step, the country is betting on strengthening competitiveness in the sector and responding to the demands of a population increasingly dependent on digital and connectivity services.
