Panama Government Seeks Solution to Rising Fuel Prices

The Panamanian government will meet with transport companies and drivers to provide subsidies and prevent a rise in public transport fares. Ministers emphasize that decisions are being made cautiously to minimize the impact on citizens.

The government of Panama met with transport companies to discuss a solution to the rising fuel prices. The Minister of Labor, Jackeline Muñoz, stated that the implementation of remote work in the public sector is not being considered as a primary option, as it requires careful evaluation to avoid harming citizens. She emphasized that remote work is a private sector initiative, and the ministry's responsibility is to ensure compliance with labor laws. The Minister of Government, Dinoska Montalvo, indicated that the amount of the subsidy for transporters will depend on their daily fuel consumption and will be calculated based on the surplus. The Minister of Finance, Felipe Chapman, assured that the cost of public transportation throughout the Republic of Panama will not increase. Subsidies will be granted directly to drivers. "We cannot make hasty or irresponsible decisions," he concluded. He also mentioned that the conflict in the Middle East could change at any moment, so decisions made by the executive branch will consider these changes to affect the population as little as possible.
