Panama: Work begins on expansion of Pan-American Highway

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) reported that, starting this Monday, April 6, work on the Pan-American Highway will continue as part of the Corridor of the Beaches expansion project. This will imply partial closures in the province of West Panama. This is the “Expansion of the Corridor of the Beaches – El Espino–Sajalices Highway and Campana Variant” project, a 19-kilometer road project. The work will extend from this Monday, April 6, to May 5, 2026, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and includes cleaning of central medians, installation of drainage systems with concrete pipes, and technical assessments at various points of the intervened section. According to the MOP, the work will be carried out on the Pan-American Highway, specifically between El Nazareno, El Espino, and Sajalices, covering approximately from kilometer 0 to kilometer 19. During this period, one lane per direction of circulation will be kept open to guarantee vehicular traffic. The entity indicated that the area will have preventive signage and the presence of road safety personnel, so it asked drivers to respect the indications and to take extreme precautionary measures to avoid incidents. This project contemplates an investment of over $228 million and includes the expansion of lanes from four to six, the placement of modified asphalt, the relocation of public services, and the expansion of drainage systems. It also includes the extension of existing bridges, the construction of at-grade and grade-separated interchanges, the construction of two interchanges on the Campana Variant, the rehabilitation of pedestrian bridges, and the acquisition of road easements. The MOP reported that these works are part of the improvements to the road infrastructure on this important corridor to the interior of the country.
