Panama Strengthens Railway Project with EU Support

The EU's technical support aims to bolster Panama's railway project, enhancing connectivity and regional integration while ensuring diverse financing options for sustainability.

The European Union and the National Secretariat of Railways of Panama have joined efforts to strengthen the early stages of the railway project in Panama, which aims not only to connect Panama with the Costa Rican border but also to consolidate a regional network in Central America. This represents a significant boost for the initiative, which faces the challenge of securing diverse and specialized funding.

The project aims to improve connectivity and strengthen regional integration, positioning Panama as a critical point in the Central American logistics network. In this context, the participation of Engineer Henry Faarup is highlighted, recognized for his leadership in the railway project and considered one of the most important for the region.

During a meeting, Faarup and the Presidential Advisor on railway matters, Roberto Roy, emphasized the importance of Panama advancing to be excluded from international lists. The European Investment Bank (EIB) could play a key role in financing, although the participation of multiple sources is expected to ensure the project's viability and long-term sustainability.

The meeting between the EU and the SNDF marked a significant step in international cooperation, with the European Union reaffirming its commitment to the development of the railway system in Central America. These efforts are essential to facilitate access to international funds and ensure that the project meets the highest standards.

In the next steps, Engineer Faarup will participate in the K-CAFTA Forum in Costa Rica, promoting the continuity of discussions between the SNDF, the BCIE, and the Costa Rican Institute of Railways (INCOFER). The possibility of cooperation through the Climate Change Adaptation Fund for Central America, managed by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), is being considered.
