The Panamanian Solar Energy Chamber has denounced the actions of the Electric Distribution Company ENSA, part of the EPM Group, for attempting to camouflage questionable activities by renaming its subsidiary ENSA Servicios to “Elion Energía.” This change in identity is not only a commercial strategy but also represents an attempt to hide practices that challenge the principles of free competition, maintaining its dominant position and harming the Panamanian energy market.
According to a report from the Consumer Protection Authority and Defense of Competition (ACODECO), ENSA has used its position as a Concessionary Distributor to favor its subsidiary in the installation and marketing of solar panels, which constitutes a conflict of interest and undermines the rights of the Panamanians.
The Panamanian Solar Energy Chamber urges the relevant authorities, especially the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP), as the regulator of the electric sector, to take firm and effective measures against these unfair practices. It also calls on the EPM Group to prioritize transparency and consumer rights over the interests of its conglomerate.
Since October 2023, the Chamber has been reporting these irregularities to ACODECO, managing to have them investigated and confirming the seriousness of the situation. It is committed to continue demanding respect for the principles of fairness and transparency in the solar sector, reaffirming its role as a defender of sustainable development and collective interest.
The name change to “Elion Energía” aims to cover up these anti-competitive practices and strengthen an dishonest dominance in the sector, harming other Panamanian companies committed to renewable energies and obstructing a transparent energy market. ENSA should focus on ensuring quality electric supply instead of diverting its efforts towards activities that go against fair competition.
Despite the evidence collected by ACODECO, ENSA has chosen to disregard the criticisms and maintain these practices, negatively affecting Panamanian consumers who deserve reliable and quality electric service.
