The Land Transit and Transport Authority (ATTT) announced in a press conference the deployment of the Road Safety Operation for Carnival 2025, during which more than 150,000 vehicles are expected to travel to the interior of the country. The director of the ATTT, Jorge Luis Ábrego, led the announcement along with deputy director Simón Henríquez and commissioner Eduardo Huertas, representative of the National Police Traffic Operations Directorate.
The road safety device, which will begin on Friday, February 28, will be supported by more than 800 police units, 170 ATTT agents, and 55 operational vehicles to maintain order and prevent accidents.
Among the key measures of the operation, there will be lane reversals in four phases to expedite traffic on the Pan-American Highway and other high traffic routes. Additionally, work and heavy equipment traffic will be suspended from Friday, February 28, to Thursday, March 6, on the Pan-American Highway and other main avenues in the capital.
Monitoring and control points will be established in strategic locations such as Sajalices, Santa María, Divisa, and Las Garzas to supervise traffic flow and attend to emergencies. Furthermore, recommendations were issued to drivers, urging them to respect speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, check the mechanical conditions of their vehicles, among other precautions.
During Carnival 2024, more than 400 traffic accidents and five fatalities were recorded. For this reason, in 2025, controls and penalties will be intensified to ensure road safety. The National Police will deploy six control devices on the Coastal Beltway to prevent the presence of individuals with precautionary measures, and the entry of certain hazardous objects will be prohibited.
Authorities called on citizens to enjoy the carnival responsibly, comply with traffic regulations, and help prevent incidents during the festivities.
