Holy Saturday, also known as Holy Saturday, is a solemn and significant day during Holy Week in Panama. Although in the Catholic world it is a day of silence and reflection, in the country it is observed with religious reverence and preparations for the celebration of Easter or Resurrection Sunday.
In the main parishes of the capital city, Easter vigils are held at night, with a special liturgy that includes the blessing of the new fire, the Easter candle, biblical readings, and the proclamation of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the towns in the interior, Holy Saturday is observed with deep respect. In places like Las Tablas, Natá, Parita, and La Villa de Los Santos, the altars remain unadorned during the day, in an atmosphere of solemn waiting. However, as night falls, candles are lit and bells ring loudly to announce the Resurrection.
In some localities, the symbolic transition from darkness to light takes place through processions of the Virgin Dolorosa, which then becomes the Virgin of Joy as it symbolizes the reunion with her resurrected son. This emotional tradition is accompanied by songs, prayers, and, at times, fireworks.
Easter Saturday has a profound meaning for Panamanians, representing hope, renewal of faith, and the victory of life over death. In evangelical Christian churches, the commemoration includes worship services, Christian concerts, and vigils focused on the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ. In communities such as San Miguelito, Tocumen, Chilibre, Pacora, Chepo, and in provinces like Chiriquí, Colón, Panamá Oeste, and Veraguas, spiritual retreats are organized to unite young people and adults in prayer, preaching, and biblical reflection to renew faith and strengthen the fellowship among believers.
