Waste Removal in Villa del Caribe Helps Prevent Flooding

Local authorities and residents in Villa del Caribe, Panama, are cleaning a creek clogged with waste to prevent recurring floods that threaten homes and public safety.

Waste Removal in Villa del Caribe Helps Prevent Flooding

The accumulation of waste irresponsably discarded by residents and passersby has caused a blockage in the waterway, affecting its drainage capacity and causing flooding that puts nearby homes at risk and complicates vehicular traffic on the road. The floods have partially covered Boyd Roosevelt Road, hindering vehicle circulation and endangering the safety of residents. The work is focused on a creek parallel to Boyd Roosevelt Road, in one of the most populated areas of the region. During the operation, 12 trucks were used to extract approximately 20 cubic yards of sediment and trash accumulated in the channel. This material has been a key factor in the obstruction of the creek, directly contributing to recurrent flooding in the area. The situation has generated concern in the community, which is why local authorities have launched a call for citizen awareness. The waste collection company and the Villa del Caribe community board have urged residents to avoid throwing waste into the streets and to use the containers designated for garbage disposal. It is expected that with the completion of these cleaning works, the area will be able to recover its drainage capacity and the floods that have affected the population during the rainy seasons will be significantly reduced.
