Woman places doll instead of newborn's body in Panama

In Panama, a woman placed a doll in a coffin, passing it off as her newborn baby's body. Her mother, preparing the funeral, discovered the substitution. The woman faces up to 11 years in prison for the deception.

According to Morales, upon arriving home to prepare the funeral, his mother wanted to say goodbye to her granddaughter. Upon inspecting the body, she noticed something was wrong. The body, supposedly transported from the capital for burial in Bugaba, Chiriquí province, turned out to be a carefully arranged doll. For this Friday, the final statements are expected before the case moves to the stage where a judge will determine if the woman will serve the harsh sentence requested by the Prosecutor's Office. The young man recounted that there were strange things happening in the capital, but he managed to bring the body of the deceased baby to his home in Chiriquí. The woman accused of orchestrating one of Panama's most bizarre scams in 2023, when she placed a doll in the coffin, passing it off as the supposed corpse of her newborn baby, could be sentenced to 11 years and 4 months in prison. At the time, it was confirmed that the woman was never pregnant on the date of October 10, 2023, when she claimed to have given birth to a girl at Santo Tomás Hospital in the province of Panama. «When they took off her shoes, she realized that the face did not correspond to that of a real baby,» he explained. In fact, the doctor who supposedly treated her certified that he did not attend to this person on the mentioned date. This is not permitted. This is the request that the Public Ministry made during the second day of the hearing. The woman was calm, and some people described her attitude as «cold and distant». The father of the alleged deceased baby, Duvier Alexander Morales, who traveled from Chiriquí to the capital to look for his baby, filed the complaint while expressing his indignation at the deception. «When my mom opened the coffin, she saw gloves and shoes on the baby. During the hearing, medical experts confirmed that the accused has no psychiatric disorders that would prevent her from facing the trial.»
