Units of the Search and Rescue Department (SAR) of Panama's National Aeronaval Service (SENAN) have strengthened their emergency response capabilities. They are now qualified to execute hoist rescue operations from UH-1ST helicopters as part of the INL-SENAN Aviation Program.
Lieutenant Eliecer Castillo, head of the Aeronaval Search and Rescue Department, explained that this certification expands the available platforms for aerial rescues. This is particularly crucial for missions in hard-to-reach areas where ground access is limited or non-existent.
"In aviation, there can be no errors, and the only way to avoid them is through permanent preparation," he emphasized.
Previously, these operations were traditionally carried out using Agusta Westland AW-139 helicopters, which come equipped with rescue hoists. However, through intensive two-week training, the staff was enabled to operate jointly with UH-1ST helicopter crews. Castillo clarified that this was a technical transition aimed at strengthening synergy between the aircrew and rescuers.
"As rescuers, we are the only ones in the country carrying out helicopter rescue operations using a hoist. For this, helicopters must have this specialized accessory," the statement noted.
This new operational capacity reinforces SAR operations previously reliant on the AW-139s, now utilizing UH-1STs to ensure continuity in emergencies. So far this year, seven people have been rescued in five separate incidents, highlighting the high demand for these missions. In comparison, during 2023, the Search and Rescue Department rescued 293 people across 90 cases.
