Class Suspended in Panama Due to Adverse Weather

The Ministry of Education (Meduca) ordered the suspension of classes this Tuesday, April 14, in several regions of the country due to adverse weather conditions affecting mainly the north of the province of Veraguas, the Ngäbe Buglé comarca, and sectors of the Bocas del Toro province. The measure applies specifically in the district of Santa Fe in Veraguas; in the Ngäbe Buglé comarca, area of Ño Kribo; as well as in at least 15 educational centers in Bocas del Toro. In the case of Veraguas, the official report details that the suspension includes the corregimiento of Calovébora and coastal communities, one of the areas most affected by persistent rains. One of the most affected educational centers in this province has been the Guásaro school, where flooding in classrooms has been reported. It was detailed that in this region of the country, 10 educational centers remain closed due to the inclement weather. According to Meduca, the decision responds to the need to safeguard the safety of students, teachers, and administrative staff, given the increase in river and stream flows, as well as the deterioration of access routes to educational centers. The entity made a call to the population and educators to take extreme precautionary measures, avoiding crossing swollen rivers or streams and staying in safe places until weather conditions improve. Authorities indicated that classes will resume once it is assessed that there are safe conditions for the return to classrooms. Meanwhile, constant monitoring of the climatic situation in the affected areas is maintained.
