A tragic accident occurred at the PSA Panama International Terminal resulting in a regrettable toll: one worker lost their life and another was seriously injured. This incident has highlighted the lack of governmental oversight on workplace safety issues, according to experts in the field.
"In an operation of this type, there should be a supervisor for each ship and not one for four vessels. The safety of the staff is not being guaranteed, which puts the lives of workers at risk," emphasized a whistleblower. Such situations are repeated due to the shortage of trained personnel in port security.
Lawyer Martín González questioned the absence of entities like the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development (Mitradel), the Social Security Fund (CSS), the Ministry of Health (Minsa), and the Fire Department in situations like this. According to him, these institutions should intervene due to their Occupational Health and Safety departments.
González also expressed his concern about the lack of oversight and training at the port terminal. He pointed out that many workers only have a diploma in safety, which is insufficient to ensure a safe work environment. In this regard, he highlighted that the responsibility often falls on the workers, who are forced to perform hazardous tasks under the threat of losing their jobs.
In summary, this tragic accident has underscored the urgent need to improve workplace safety conditions at the PSA Panama International Terminal and highlights the importance of more effective oversight by the competent authorities.
